Introductory Course on Google Earth Engine

A recent advancement in environmental data analysis using geospatial technology is the Google Earth Engine (GEE) – a cloud-based platform that enables the user to visualize and conduct geospatial analysis of the Earth’s surface. With its commitment to provide up-to-date tools to its clients, GrIDS launched a beginners’ course on Google Earth Engine which aims to give the participants an overview of its applications.

The company had the chance to pilot this course to the research team of the Pest Risk Identification and Management (PRIME) Project. Twelve (12) participants had been trained by GrIDS in Chandler Hall at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) on June 27-29, 2018. The GrIDS resource persons present during the training were For. Milben Bragais who introduced the company and its services, For. Ozzy Boy Nicopior (provided the lecture on remote sensing), Mr. Jan Martin Magcale (gave an introduction on using codes and scripts), and EnP Lester Ryan Mojica who discussed the GEE applications to the participants. The scope of the training included orientation on Code Editor, data acquisition and visualization, and actual application such as cropland mapping and land cover classification.

Since this is a newly-created course of the company, piloting this to the research team of the said project had really been helpful as they were able to provide valuable comments and queries that the company can use for refining the manual and the course itself. Future participants in this training can expect an updated manual version and improved course. However, while this may be a beginners’ course on GEE, participants must have background knowledge on remote sensing and using scripts as the lecture only serves as a refresher.
